Double Fairlies are articulated locomotives and have 2 power bogies. The cradle carries two boilers and the cab and has no wheels).
The single Fairlie has 1 power bogie. The chassis has fixed wheels on the back. It carries boiler, water tank and tender.
Fairlie granted the FFR the permanent patent rights to build new engines.

Beyer Garratt K1

Prototype for the NGG/G16 series of locomotives, purchased from the Tasmanian Government Railways

K1 (build: Beyer, Peacock and Company 1909) the world's first Garratt locomotive. Restored and entered service in autumn 2006.
Currently on operational loan to Statfold Barn Railway. (photo SBR)



Beyer Garratt NG/G16 locomotives build for the SAR (South African Railway): no 87, 130, 138, 143. Purchased by the WHR and regauged to FFR-WHR standard.

NG16/6 are articulated locomotives and have 2 power bogies (front bogie carries a water tank - back bogie carries the tender),
the cradle carries the boiler and cab and has no wheels. The total weight of the set +- 62 tonnes !)
